Annotated Bibliography

  • Abanes, Richard., American Militias - Rebellion, Racism, and Religion (Order through Amazon.Com). Downers Grove, Illinois: IVP, 1996. This book shows the connections between Chuck Missler, Chuck Smith, and the Racist and Militia movements in the US. A well documented book from a former CRI researcher. Chuck Smith is covered on p 219. Chuck Missler is covered on pp 199-202.
  • Abanes, Richard, End-Time Visions - The Road to Armageddon (Order through Amazon.Com), 1998. Abanes goes after Chuck Smith and Chuck Missler in this book.
  • Geisler, Norman L. The Battle for the Resurrection (Order through Amazon.Com)
  • Alnor, William M. Soothsayers of the Second Advent (Order through Amazon.Com), (Old Tappan, New Jersey: Revell, ©1989).
  • Balmer, Randall. Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory (Order through Amazon.Com). Oxford: Oxford Press, 1993. Chapter 1 is devoted to Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa.Book from the PBS Series. Popular treatment of Calvary Chapel, but with flaws, including the incorrect belief that Calvary Chapel pastors are elected.
  • Balmer, Randall. Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory (Order through Amazon.Com), VHS Video tape, 1993, USA, WTTW/Chicago and ISIS Productions, Vision Video. Calvary Chapel is covered by this set of Video tapes about Evangelicalism in America.
  • Christian Research Institute, Tape C052, Geisler/Hanegraaff, The Battle for the Resurrection
  • DeMar, Gary. Last Days Madness (Order through Amazon.Com), American Vision, Atlanta, Georgia, 1997 Chuck Smith is quoted from a Feb 1989 publication, "Charisma And Christian Living" article titled, The Second Coming, Any Day Now.
  • Di Sabatino, David. History of the Jesus Movement. [http://www.ldolphin.org/jpindex.shtml]. 1994. This was Di Sabatino's Masters degree thesis for the 1993-94 semester year at McMaster Divinity College (McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, CANADA). An excellent source of materials to help gain a historical perspective on Calvary Chapel. A must read. His bibliography is a great source of research information all by itself.
  • Enroth, Ronald, The Story of the Jesus People (Order Through Amazon.Com). , 1972.
  • Enroth, Ronald, The Jesus People: Old Time Religion in the Age of Aquarias (Order through Amazon.Com). Grand Rapids, Mich: Eedrmans, 1972. Chapter 4 covers Calvary Chapel.
  • Norman L. Geisler, In Defense of the Resurrection, (Lynchburg, Virginia: Quest Publications, © 1991). This book defends the historical Protestant view of the resurrection of the believer against the view of Murray Harris. The view that Harris was teaching is almost identical to the view of Pastor Chuck Smith. Geilser resigned his position within the Evangelical Free denomination over this issue. This book covers the personal aspects of the struggle as well as the doctrinal issues at stake.
  • Orange County Register, July 1, 1997. The Orange County Register has a long tradition of running "puff pieces" on Calvary Chapel. This article was in celebration of the 70th birthday of Pastor Chuck Smith, which happened in June, 1997. There was no new information here, and the absense of Lonnie Frisbee from the Calvary Chapel history was abismal.
  • Orange County Register, March 7, 1998. Landmark article as it was one of the few to not be totally partisan. Hardly a deep investigation, however.
  • John N. Vaughan, The World's Twenty Largest Churches - Church Growth Principles in Action (Order through Amazon.com), (Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Books, © 1984). This book shares a common characteristic of most church growth books in that it is un-critical and favors whatever creates large churches. Still it has some interesting (but implicit) commentary on the authority structure of Calvary Chapel. Pages 189-197 cover Calvary Chapel.
  • Baker, Paul. Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music? Jesus music--where it began, where it is, and where it is going (order from Amazon.Com), Word Books, Waco TX, 1979.
  • A Decade of Jesus Music 1969-1979 - A decent site listing most of the artists of the time period. Some real audio like this - Mustard Seed Faith track.
  • Wikipedia entry on Calvary Chapel
