Does Calvary Chapel Teach Christianity is NOT a Religion?
Members of Calvary Chapel are frequently taught that Christianity is "not a religion", but "a relationship." This little cute catch phrase is easily refuted by a cursory reading of the passage in James where the Christian faith is referred to as a religion.
James 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
The Bible is not condemning religion, just false religions.
The trouble here is that these sort of "misstatements" become matters of fact to the people in the audiences. Certainly, the cute catch phrase is appealing. It is a way of differentiating our views from those of others. However, it, like the word "denomination" has an accepted meaning. To deny the meaning, is to deny words of their meaning. It is often a sign of the cult mentality when they develop a unique vocabulary and then proceed to argue that others are in error for not using their vocabulary. Mention something to most CC people about "the Christian Religion" and you will get the argument that "it is not a religion, but a relationship."
