Like the Word of Faith movement, Calvary Chapel teaches that Jesus went to hell (the heart of the earth) after His death. Unlike the Word of Faith movement, Calvary Chapel does not believe that Jesus underwent torture by Satan while in hell. Hear Kenneth Hagin's comments on this subject and compare them to Chuck Smith's view. Pastor Chuck Smith bases his teaching on this verse (and a few others):
Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Unlike the Word of Faith movement, Calvary Chapel, in an equally bizarre twist, teaches that hell is a literal physical place that is actually located at the center of the (material) earth. This is a result of their Dispensational literalism

We can not recommend CinC as an authoritative source on the Word of Faith movement ( see our review), but the author of CinC argues at length against Calvary Chapel's understanding of these crucial passages. The author (p 166-167) argues that Jesus did not go to hell at death, but to paradise. This is based on the passage.
Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Although there has been a historical controversy about this subject, most contemporary theologically conservative theologians agree with the author of CinC and teach that Jesus did not go to hell between His death and His resurrection, but rather went to paradise.
